<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am so excited to be part of Knock it Off hosted by <a href="http://www.eleganceandelephants.com/">Elegance & Elephants</a> this year! I follow along every time and LOVE seeing what everyone comes up with. It's so much fun to see the participants on the blog and the <a href="https://www.flickr.com/groups/2152563@N22/">flickr group</a> create. There are some great prizes for the sew along entries, so make sure you check it out and enter your knock off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Part of the reason I started sewing was because I loved children's fashion, but I hated the price tag. I've loved this jottum dress since the first time I saw it but there was no way I was going to spend over $300 on a child's dress. I decided that Knock it Off was the perfect opportunity to make one of my own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After all the color blocking, cutting, measuring and gathering for the underskirt, I can understand why the original is so expensive. I've never spent so long making anything, but I can honestly say that I love it. My version is a little bit different, but I couldn't help adding my own touches.</div>

I made this out of about 2 yards of Kona cotton in white and indigo and 1/2 yard of stiff tulle. Adding in the cost of the thread and the zipper, it didn't cost more than $15 to sew up. The skirt is color blocked with strips of white. Each strip is sewn together and then it's all box pleated at the waist.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for looking! I wish I could have done a tutorial for you, but it's all subjective to waist size. I can tell you what I did, though.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To determine the size of your skirt, measure the waist(or chest, whichever is larger) and add ease and seam allowance(W). Multiply that number by three to get the total width of your skirt piece(Wx3). Now, decide how many bows you want(B)(I had 4). Each bow has 2 tails. So, the amount of white pieces you need is Bows x2. (Bx2). Determine how wide you want your bow's tails to be(T) and multiply that number the number of bow's tails you have(T(Bx2)). Divide up your remaining width to place in between your tails(Wx3)/(T). Add seam allowance to all calculations and you should end up with the width of your color blocking pieces. Determine the length by measuring from your child's waist to where you want the hemline and don't forget to add length for hemming.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sew that all together and you "should" end up with the right width. Box pleat everything so it looks right and it should be about the same width as your waist measurement. Run a basting stitch along the top to hold it all together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next piece will be the width of your skirt. This piece will be cut in half and then one half in half again. You will need to add seam allowance to each piece. If you don't want a sash, you can just do one piece with seam allowance for the back. If you want a sash, figure out how long and wide you want it and sew it in the sides. Cut out the same size pieces for your lining.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you want an underskirt, you'll have to at least double the width of the waist(I tripled it)gather that and sew it into the lining. Along the bottom, I measured 6 inches of stiff tulle and sewed about 8 strips together, gathered them and sewed them to the skirt lining. If you don't want the tulle to itch, make sure there is cotton between it and your child's legs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Okay, now sew in your lining but don't forget to calculate the length/width of your straps and sew those in to the top. I added buttonholes on the back of the dress to hold the straps in and I put a zipper down the back of the dress. I made simple bows and hand sewed them to the waist and straps. Hem everything and pat yourself on the back. You deserve it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them. Best of luck!</div>

I was so surprised and amazed when I got invited to participate in this round for Flip This Pattern! This is one of my favorite series in blog land and I get to be a part of it. Thanks for letting me play along.<br />
<br />
Everyone knows how lovely Oliver + S patterns are and the lovely croquet dress is great on the inside and out. I love the way the insides of the garments are perfect.
For my flip, I decided to make a romper with flutter sleeves.

I've had this fabric for at least two years. Originally, I bought it for an Easter dress but I never really got around to cutting it out. So, it sat with my fabrics for a very long time. Occasionally, I'd pull it out for a project, but it just never seemed to be right. Then, inspiration struck! It was perfect for a Market Dress!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I decided to put pockets the dress this time around, and I made the skirt fuller than the <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2014/06/market-dress.html">previous one</a> too. Pockets are always a winner in my book. They also add +10 to any outfit in the eyes of my daughter.</div>

This photo will remain one of my favorite photos of Little Miss until the end of time. This was her second July 4th celebration. Every year, we head to the lake with friends. One of our traditions that I hope will never end.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
One of my favorite times of year is almost here. Since it falls right around my birthday, I always felt like the fireworks were for me ;) But, we have some traveling plans up ahead so we're furiously trying to get everything squared away before we go over the mountains to visit family and friends we left behind when we moved away.<br />

The outfit I wanted to share with you was worn and has ketchup all over the front so I have to do some fancy stain removal before I can take photos. Since <strike>I don't have photos</strike> the only photo I have is this bad instragram shot, I'll share photos from previous years. Nothing was sewn by me, but I'm sharing anyway. Look away from my store bought goods!<br />

A couple from last year. I swear, she grew 2 feet over the winter. The first photo cracks me up every time I see it. It completely reminds me of Coco Chanel "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous."<br />
<br />
Yeah, the boots. Because she loved them so much, I did a crazy thing and bought them in the next size up. I made her an outfit for last year, but it was an epic failure. If you want to make fun, go check it out <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/07/fourth-of-july-snafu.html">here</a>. It's okay to laugh. I know I did!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This pattern is too sweet! I am seriously in love. <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/amelieandhenri">Amelie and Henri</a> has blown me away once again. Previously, I'd sewn up and fallen in love with the <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2014/03/easter-dress-amelie-and-henri-esmee.html">Esmee Dress</a>. I may love the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/amelieandhenri?section_id=15216546&ref=shopsection_leftnav_2">Market Dress</a> more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was surprised at how quickly this came together, even with the pin tucks on the straps and waistband. I actually followed the pattern on this one except that I didn't include pockets. The fabric pattern was already so busy, I thought the pockets were just too much.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok, that was a bit of a fib. I did the pin tucks different than called for in the directions. There were supposed to be two on each strap and three on the waist band. I switched them because I don't know how to read a pattern... As a result, my straps are quite a bit thinner, but I still love how it turned out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love how the underskirt is meant to show. It gives such nice dimension to the dress.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The dress is relatively simple pinafore but the added pin tucks and the underskirt really make it look more complicated than it actually is. I layered it over an eyelet ruffle tank I had hiding in the bottom of a drawer somewhere. It would be cute over a short sleeved blouse too.</div>

It buttons all the way down the back which I think is darling, but a zipper could easily be installed. The buttons make the fit a bit more flexible. The straps cross in the back and button in place. There is plenty of room to move down the buttons and let out the skirt so she should be able to wear this for a couple of years. I LOVE that in a pattern.</div>

<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9987.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEgjmE6j34yorDqTC96oIh_bs5e6q_W8N-SQGcNbT0QWQIT6He7_Fz6vIACkY7BS8BQvwPOTv7TbHxBxy6bap3YoUuEaHvOtcHbQGSKF1Y77G3e1cazt4bhhCgpbI3lPJQvcP5Eo_0M0DDw3rb7N3JzThRuVa76uTvEKPsfIFkiu_lY=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I have a simple tutorial for you. It looks a lot more complicated than it actually is. Seriously, you'll just be adding two more seams than usual to make this look. You can do a sheer overlay or a solid color. If you have a bodice pattern, you can make this look. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9988.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEiPJVmnsgfOxkaKLum7ON576FC1l6-u_lM1PQ7iQKqmCTHSnkoKbT_cG562K-3EuKVh8lRF4q68OghVsg3p9IW3kc5OY3afTAUkN6eNVx2JWMEwY_RbBGEBG4P5NArLwFEmwkF1Ww9jqZqC7aksGH4KbdS1yv1Jc7wWXukNPlSj9cI=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In case you haven’t noticed yet, I LOVE to take patterns and change them around a bit to get a look that’s different from the original. It’s easier than you might think. Today, I’ll show you how to make a sheer inset and overlay on any bodice you already have. You just need a scrap of sheer fabric, so you can raid your stash. It would be fun to make this with a contrasting panel too.<br />
<br />
<br />
Have your favorite bodice? Good, we can start! We’re going to draw a line down it and cut it so you might want to use a copy. Here we go!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9979.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEji4DsXbP6gqX8P3Drcu_9RIZR0Q3rVrfpKebr2XQWGm5GF_U3ievnj6-UoCcjXxa3lCnmKTs3G_uxx7Z0P1evQqBrRnL2LmJHKi3oy4e2rk0qV1IzdLH1GworbP-CyHWPenUZrrYaOEPDhMbZv0qnJlU4k2WKjLE25gaISGjdeYc8=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I like to use my drafting ruler here. I LOVE this thing. You’ve probably seen me bust it out before. If you plan to do a lot of pattern modification, you’ll probably want to get one but don’t be discouraged if you don’t have one in your artillery yet. You can just eyeball this curve. Really, you can. It’s not going to change the fit of your top at all – it’s all aesthetic. Just draw a curved line from the shoulder down pattern until the like the look of it. You can see where I did mine.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9980.jpg"><img height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEjnqC3CyaxQWUFPOwIy3HjgY9W0gNBspUo5RThpfYi-dxyLLvDA377zPrMD4gEBDvkS5jHvY_o78LCPGdEv6tBJB_ZxLMJGSt9YO4aRaW41JlH7zxiWTuaRnI-ud5i2-WClhCQo2HsMw7DDIDIacp2EZ4eRg_thAdLl-vCC-rND-_k=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, cut it apart along the line you drew. Take your two new pieces and trace them out on another piece of paper. Add seam allowance along the lines you cut.<br />
<br />
<br />
Okay, easy as pie! Now, go cut out your pieces. You’ll want to cut the piece that says “fold” along the fold as it states (Cut one in the main fabric and one in your sheer fabric. I’ve used a black lace). You’ll cut two of the other piece (main fabric) making sure you cut a mirror image.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/photo.jpg"><img height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEgyZlaW3_Lq-vBlTwzmCsGFNF1Qeg6ep5xoO4yjXpjgYDldmnC-PKwqng-dd3uOTNwAVDzrD4BsWRL3qtfuFvrQamonb1Q-wBVsWEG5h6Ixel-50_dy_aW3q8Q1K9G4wd07Q9HeT3W9fOlb-77UD-frCKY09FNFZ-bPKtdrRU4=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here’s how I laid my pattern pieces out. I already cut out my lace piece and I set it there to show you what it looks like cut out.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9982.jpg"><img height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEjmFgspdK8UkzDws8rTj2cPLguzQJ69ZE3IdVuL6P_aU4938Gfe61_VQ5Sh3QhMAlXxqJIfaSYbxptbAUJy6I11VVjqIkDkB24hO-c_7agwP4gh7vcMHvzbLUpwSO_5Zz7aWpC24GrooAzBYzIATEW06V0wt0IwcgfXEW4yGWVzGcc=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Lay your sheer piece over it’s matching main fabric piece like so. You’ll want to baste these two together. Really, you do. It will save you tons of headache later. Believe me.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9984.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEie8QzEHYrUS5YfdRLME2qvkKKvlOXY6TyHa8DXypotG3vqHtc9QmtdGM5_nYGeCRsq9A0kRXXiDpDn9UcViFDHqDjyupa53LTbFFFiPVNDfE9V86KxvIMAiKdSMjPq2YwholWxdbZu1CvczOoo9vJBXcn1qOkarHJLzteKzLGuLfg=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, take your side piece and pin it to your center piece, right sides together. It’s not going to look like it will match, but keep pinning and it will come into place. I use a LOT of pins. (You can see my basting stitches!). Keep on pinning and then go sew. Repeat for the other side.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9986.jpg"><img height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEhH6kQ8dimftYq7vhhOSt4euOfIfWyQRLgYrDZd0MClJZuBQbeoL1BFA0zWpEBfjNAs2qVeI69I3yzi8NNoJQBiXI5KrBZEhOXQBYQWbqdK9qkgJ6IsQhTd4Xz_GM9fw1-0pv6EYb6xLAg6aaXbh06gC3kwqsjP5hQl5lWV_9BNSa8=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, go iron the snot out of this thing. Iron it until it cries. I pressed my seams toward the sides. The curves seem to fall best that way. A hot iron is your friend here. Don’t skip this step or these curves won’t play nicely when it’s being worn. I know. Don’t ask.<br />
<br />
<br />
Now, you have a bodice front piece that matches the original pattern piece. You sew with this just like you would if you’d cut the original pattern piece out. Follow the directions in your pattern to construct the rest of your top or dress.<br />
<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://www.straight-grain.com/2013/08/pattern-release-hanami-top-or-dress-2.html">hanami</a> pattern which calls for a lining. If you have to cut a lining, you don’t need to make a panel on the lining as well. Just cut out the original bodice pattern piece (If you’ve cut it, just tape it back together).<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9990.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEh1QA5_DjDW4dWbjhckE16FuDtCzDEw97g-U7rd2zdEwK4IcXKisNTuqJ_KW4HTYxiJ_1RRYMqqg0DKg_OYlHh-HsnKxy5Bq08bnlfEDBMow3bP0l2ed59kZpS9Zvfg6xm084Z9XRGyoxS6XTXO2lfQs2tdNIq7muoFCU6sWXHCkBk=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
To complete my look I sewed on an exposed zipper and lined my sleeves with the same lace I used for the inset. Everything was sewn according to my pattern’s directions, I just took the time to change up the look of the bodice a little bit.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_9994.jpg"><img height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEgFpi9ssKni50IzDBlQE-Y2yatWSeqnhFzXUhZ3eWJCO0yuaO3dVuyrPRA7ml0LFAS4bkdOCbxb7GW-XtzAUG8ytFK8U91Ap3yY61dc1lO1arob5B5EMXa0BeeVo88Gr3JSvmh2DM1WA_IhQght2paIRnrTfwpyB4l3hw2dlXf64bs=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_0008.jpg"><img height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEihRgZCxDkGVPWfOOG6hyGUJeVsk6eVzARYGVJb7OGmkltpgoAFuNrAJXyjf2cjOv72qma6FRO8OZ0KSxWydDDlsXyVb-cSlsmk5-UH0gL8lHf5EWmlWO6c0koFV64cW9HwMNKjShIxlr3BxzbfingnGeRu7bOQwiY4SjJ8Xj6-ihc=" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/IMG_0014.jpg"><img height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/proxy/AVvXsEh3kVxlpp70OfHJfnH-RlisSeiiKjCUIGuOjgbZQiEzR739hyphenhyphen3i4XsiUaKjdPhDFJiUMyUlTHpYD31netDtYUZHlNBXOgKMaWd9ZOf1LzG5Pau0XjaVF0sm6S16gFi8AmCUDlRhxrsXB78hje6AIisjP9BebFBeRXlfbLhbv_cGuQY=" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This is a fun technique to add a little bit of color blocking to existing patterns too. Just sew in a contrasting color in regular cotton instead of a layered sheer fabric. The combinations are endless!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheLilyBirdStudio">Lily Bird Studio</a> makes some of the cutest patterns. I know I've talked about them before on the blog, but I really do love these designs.. I got to sew up their newest pattern, the <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/181851388/lily-bird-studio-pdf-sewing-pattern?ref=shop_home_active_3">Sandy Tunic </a>and I'm in love!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This top has the sweetest pleated placket and the pattern makes it SO easy. There are notches for where the folds are supposed to go so you don't even have to measure. She included notches for the placket too! Seriously, this top came together like a dream!</div>

I sewed up a size 3 and it fits beautifully. It's a bit longer than I expected but, then, I forgot to take off some length because I used a rolled hem instead of intended traditional hem. My tunic is about 1 inch longer because it. I also used the instructions for the ruffle neck included with Lily Bird Studio's <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/77522592/summer-blouse-for-girls-button-up-blouse?ref=shop_home_active_6">Summer Blouse</a>. I've made several Summer Blouses which I've posted about <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/12/i-love-london-skirt.html">here</a> and <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/09/project-run-and-play-sew-along-mad-for.html">here</a>.</div>

I know that my button holes look a bit wonky. That's my fault because I forgot to add interfacing. Don't judge the pattern based on my oversight. The pattern actually calls for snaps instead of button but since I was sewing with swiss dot voile, I thought I'd stick with buttons. I didn't think the voile could withstand the stress of snaps.<br />

The pattern comes in long sleeve, 3/4 sleeve and short sleeve. I sewed up the short sleeve version. The short sleeve has the prettiest cut outs which are bound with bias tape and tie closed. I love the way the tutorial made it easy to finish these off so nicely.</div>

It has a slightly curved hem which I chose to finish using my rolled hem foot but the pattern has great instructions for hemming a curve.</div>

I wanted the shirt to be lightweight for the summer so I used a lightweight oxford stripe shirting and swiss dot. It is, indeed, lightweight and cool. It will be perfect for warm weather.<br />

Previously, I'd posted this tutorial over at <a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/">The Sewing Rabbit</a>. I will show you how to draft your own tulip sleeved jacket from any existing bodice pattern you already have. You can use the info on making a tulip sleeve for anything you'd like from dresses to jackets. I’ll show you how to make the rest of this cute jacket too while I’m at it. You can use any pattern in your stash that has a basic bodice and an inset short sleeve. Go grab your favorite. I used the bodice and short sleeve from <a href="http://fiveandtendesigns.com/">five and ten designs</a>. I sized up to give it more room so that it can be worn over tops. If your bodice pattern if pretty fitted, you’ll want to size up as well.</div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here we go!</div>
<br />
You can do this with a woman's pattern too and it would be so pretty over your summer dresses.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9856-2-of-5.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9856-2-of-5.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<br />
What you’ll need</div>
<div>
<br />
Fabric for outside and lining fabric<br />
Basic bodice pattern and sleeve pattern<br />
Ruler<br />
Paper<br />
Pencil, marker or favorite writing utensil<br />
Button<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Alright, now that you have your pattern, put it on a piece of paper and trace it.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9822-1-of-8.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9822-1-of-8.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9823-2-of-8.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9823-2-of-8.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Next, flip it over and trace the other side so that you have a whole sleeve traced out.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9824-3-of-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9824-3-of-8.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Draw a line from the bottom corner to the opposite corner. This will be a guide for the next step. I used a lighter color pencil, but you don’t have to. Use what you have.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9829-4-of-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9829-4-of-8.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Using the bottom corner line as a guide, draw curved shape from about 1/3 of the way in to the bottom corner. I cheated and used my french curve ruler, but you can eyeball it just as easily. Just make it look something like this. You don’t have to be precise here. The curve you draw, will be the curve of your tulip overlap on your sleeve. You want it to be straighter at the bottom and more curved at the top but don’t worry too much.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9832-5-of-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9832-5-of-8.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Alright! Now, you cut it out. It will look like a petal. The straight side will be cut on the fold of your fabric, so mark it accordingly. Make sure to mark the size of your new pattern piece too.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9836-6-of-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9836-6-of-8.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, take your bodice front pattern, trace around it and add 1 inch to the center.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9838-8-of-8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9838-8-of-8.jpg" height="640" width="494" /></a></div>
<br />
Decide how wide you want your button overlap to be. Mine was about 2 inches, so I measured down 2.5 inches (I added .5 inches for seam allowance). From that point, draw a curve down to the bottom of your pattern piece. I didn’t like the first curve I draw, so I did a second one. You can use a french curve ruler or you can eyeball it. When you’re done, cut out your new pattern piece, marking it correctly so you know what it is later.<br />
<br />
Once you have your pattern pieces cut out, take them over to your fabric and cut out all your pieces. You should have 3 pattern pieces, the 2 you just made and you’ll use an unaltered bodice back piece that was paired with your bodice front from the original pattern.<br />
4 front pieces – 2 outer and 2 lining<br />
2 back pieces – 1 outer and 1 lining<br />
2 sleeves<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9841-2-of-6.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9841-2-of-6.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Once you cut your pieces, sew your fronts and backs together along the tops and the sides. You’ll have two unfinished bodices-one in your outer fabric and one in your lining. Put these two bodices, right sides together and sew them together along the outside leaving the armholes unsewn. Don’t forget to leave a space in the bottom to turn your pieces.<br />
<br />
Okay, turn your pieces and then sew your bottom closed and topstitch the entire thing. It should look like a sleeveless jacket at this point. Next up, baste your arms together.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9843-4-of-6.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9843-4-of-6.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Hem your sleeves. Make sure you hem the right end. The straightest edge is the bottom.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9845-5-of-6.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9845-5-of-6.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold your sleeve in half, wrong sides together, to find the center. Place this fold on the seam line of the side of your bodice(right sides together). This will ensure that both sleeves are positioned the same on your top and look the same once they’re sewn on. Start pinning. Go toward the back of your bodice first if you want your tulip in the front. Go toward the front first if you want the tulip in the back. Mine was pinned back first, then front.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9846-6-of-6.jpg"><img src="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/IMG_9846-6-of-6.jpg" height="494" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Pin all the way around. You’ll get to a point where your sleeve looks like this. It’s supposed to. Don’t panic! just keep lining up your sleeve, pulling your pins out and repinning all the layers together as you go along (aren’t you glad you basted earlier?!). Once you have all of your edges lined up and approximately 800 pins in place, take it to your machine and sew that puppy on!!<br />
<br />
Turn right side out and check for puckers in your bodice. Make sure your sleeves look right. Use your seam ripper if you have any flaws. Inevitably, I always sew one sleeve on backwards so that I have one overlap at the front and one at the back. EVERY TIME!<br />
<br />
Position your button where you want it and sew on your button hole and DONE!<br />
<br />
Dance, holler, and cavort! Then, go take pictures of your cutie in her jacket.<br />
<br />

<br />
I've always loved the <a href="http://skirtastop.com/category/vintage-may/">Vintage May series</a>. A lot of my sewing is vintage inspired, so the series speaks to me. I enjoy seeing what everyone comes up with each time the series comes around. This year, I decided to take the inspiration and sew a little something of my own.<br />
<br />
I made a voile top with a sweet vintage-like floral print and a pair of high waisted, German inspired, shorts with suspenders circa the late 40's. Depending on how it's worn, the two pieces give a very different look. <br />

<a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/09/project-run-and-play-sew-along-mad-for.html">Here is the vintage pattern</a> I sewed up this fall for the <a href="http://www.projectrunplay.com/">Project Run and Play</a> sew along. It came straight from a vintage 40's pattern. I loved the suspenders on both pieces but since I'd already done a look like this, I decided to do it a little different this time. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was also influenced by the high waisted shorts of the 50's and the flowing tops of the 70's. So, my look isn't straight up vintage, but definitely inspired and merging several aspects.</div>

Greatly inspired by my 40's pattern and it's versatility - extra thick hems, removable straps, several pieces- and it's ability to grow with a child, I knew I wanted separates that could be worn many ways.<br />
<br />
The top is made from voile and is light and airy. It has buttons halfway down the back which leaves the back partly open. It can be worn tucked in or loose (Miss wore it buttoned in the front today which is actually pretty cute).<br />
<br />
The shorts are faux suede with a high waist and a sweetheart waist band. They can be worn with the suspenders or they can be worn with the waist folded down and the top untucked.<br />

I'm over at <a href="http://www.sewingrabbit.com/">The Sewing Rabbit</a> today with a tutorial on how to sew an inset on any bodice. It's much easier than you'd think and easily adaptable for women's and girl's patterns. Head over to <a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/2014/05/add-a-sheer-inset-to-any-bodice.html">my tutorial</a> and I'll tell you all about it!<br />

I wrote this post for The <a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/">Sewing Rabbit</a> originally, but I'm posting it here now for your enjoyment. This is such an easy and quick little belt to put together, you can whip up in under 10 minutes. I did all three in about 30, and that included the embellishments!<br />
<br />
<br />

If your daughter is anything like mine, she loves accessories. Miss has been carrying purses around she could walk. It’s been close to 4 years now! She also hasn’t been able to keep her pants up since she’s started walking, so I devised a plan that could be both fashionable and functional. Crazy, I know!<span style="font-size: 16px;">What’s really fun about this is how versatile and quick they are. You can whip these puppies out in under 10 minutes! Your daughter can help. Miss and I will show you how to make this little bit of waist bling.</span></div>

<span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: 700;">What you’ll need.</span></div>
<ul style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin: 0px 0px 2.6rem 4rem; padding: 0px;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: disc;">2 1 inch D rings</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: disc;">ribbon about 1 inch wide (just make sure it fits inside your D rings)</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: disc;">ric rac or other embelishments</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: disc;">hot glue gun or fabric glue</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; list-style-type: disc; text-align: left;">thread</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px;">
To start with, measure your child’s waist. I’ve found that what works best is to add 10 inches to that measurement, double it and then cut that amount from your ribbon. That way your ribbon is doubled the entire length of the belt. This is easy to do if your daughter has an itty bitty 19 inch waist but, if your daughter is 6 and has a bigger waist, or your working with scrap ribbon, make sure you have enough ribbon to go around the waist and at least 12 inches of extra. Ok, now that we’ve done our math, let’s cut our ribbon!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px;">
Apply fray check to the ends of the ribbon or heat seal the ends to keep them from unraveling.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

Thread the ribbon through both D rings. Pin your ribbon as close to the rings as you can get to keep the rings from sliding around. You can keep pinning the length of the ribbon if you’d like. Some ribbon can get slippery. It’s totally up to you.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: Roboto, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px;">
For this next part, I put on my zipper foot. You don’t have to use one if you don’t have one but the closer you can get to the D rings, the less they’ll slip around. Now, sew down the width of your ribbon a couple of times, being sure to anchor the beginning and ending of your stitches. Because the D rings are thick, you won’t be able to pivot and keep sewing, so you want to make sure this stitching doesn’t come undone.</div>

When you get it the size you want it, pin it to keep it from unraveling and trim the excess off. You can either use thread to sew through the whole thing a few times or you can glue a felt circle to the bottom. I had some felt flowers so that’s what I glued to the bottom of mine. Now, you can glue it to the front of your belt, making your cute belt even cuter!</div>

We bought our first house! This is exciting for us because we've been moving every couple of years for the last 8 years. Things have gone awry with our rentals (owners selling, moving back in, deciding to rent to their children, fires...) so we are over the moon to finally have a place to truly settle into (we've already slapped some paint up on the walls!).<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, that means another move. This time, we're only moving a little ways, instead of across the state through a snow storm of doom, so things are looking up. But, that means that sewing frenzy of procrastination needs to come to an end and I need to actually pack for my move next week. Yeah, I said next week.<br />
<br />
I'll be gone for a bit while I get things sorted out and put away. Try not to miss me too much.<br />
<br />
Last night I packed up most of my sewing room. All of my fabric is in boxes. All of my sewing notions are tucked into littler boxes inside bigger boxes. All of my patterns are taped up and filed with all the other boxes against the wall. I shall be wearing black until all is unpacked and I can back to what I love.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11424122917160635342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7981432394031319109.post-33845858110024404122014-04-01T20:31:00.000-07:002014-07-10T09:51:18.562-07:00Lily Bird Studio Birthday Dress<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've sewn many patterns by <a href="http://thelilybirdstudio.com/">Lily Bird Studio</a>. I love how well they're written and I love how well they fit. I haven't blogged about all of them but I hope to do so in the future. You've already seen a couple versions of her <a href="http://thelilybirdstudio.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=5&products_id=16">summer blouse</a> in <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/09/project-run-and-play-sew-along-mad-for.html">pink</a> and <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/12/i-love-london-skirt.html">cream</a>. I've also sewn her <a href="http://thelilybirdstudio.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4&products_id=27">cuffed shorts</a> and a couple of dresses. I own most of her patterns outright :)</div>

This is the <a href="http://thelilybirdstudio.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=9">birthday dress</a>. It is offered in infant sizes in one pattern in 0-24 months and older girls in 2T-8. I love that this is available for such a large range of sizes. </div>

The dress has a button placket in the back, flutter sleeves, a lined bodice, empire waist, and sweet narrow belt. The pattern also has a bottom ruffle, but I chose to leave it off to showcase the print on the dress.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pattern has you use a narrow hem to finish the edges of the sleeves, but I chose to line mine with gold shot cotton to add some color and to match the belt. I used the same fabric to line the bodice. I thought it added an unexpected flash of color to the inside and it made me happy. I usually use muslin batiste for my linings so I was branching out.</div>

<br />
So, this outfit was inspired by Persnickety. I couldn't afford buying theirs so I made my own. I especially loved the apricot underdress. So perfect for warm summer days and it layered beautifully with the pinafore. I was smitten! It's not the first time I've had to make my own Persnickety dress. I made a <a href="http://daisiesanddresses.blogspot.com/2013/06/persnickety-knockoff.html">pin tucked jumper</a> last summer. I might have a problem.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the bodice and sleeve pattern from <a href="http://fiveandtendesigns.com/">five and ten designs</a> to construct both pieces. I also made my underdress 100% reversible. The inside is pink chambray and the outside is apricot shot cotton. I forgot to get photos of the pink dress, but it's pretty basic. The apricot is my favorite anyway.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I scooped the neck on the bodice and brought it to a subtle "v" in the front. I also brought in the shoulders a bit so that the whole thing would look more fitted. Nice and simple but the shot cotton adds texture to the dress and spices it up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since I wanted the dress to be reversible, I had to sew on an exposed zipper. I used a brown one to compliment the orange dress and then layered pink lace over it. I also ran lace down the back seam of the dress.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pinafore's sleeves are trimmed in cotton lace and the neck is bound with matching apricot shot cotton which comes around the back to form the ties. Little Miss has demanded a pocket. She was sad that there was nowhere to store her treasures.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The back is left open. You can see the zipper on the under dress. It ties at the top and the waist with apricot ties. I think it's cute, but it reminds me a bit of a hospital examination gown. I'm toying with the idea of putting a button on the top but I'd have to add extra width to the back (perhaps a tab would work?) If I do that, I'll add a bodice lining as well and lose the bias binding at the neck.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Do you need a quick themed skirt for a holiday or event? I have a very simple tutorial for you today. You can add this to any any existing skirt or whip up a simple elastic waist skirt. I won’t do a tutorial for making the skirt itself since there are a lot of great ones out there (<a href="http://couplejones.wordpress.com/2013/01/17/childs-skirt-tutorial-for-sewing-beginners/" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(221, 221, 221); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank"><span style="color: black;">like this one</span></a>), but I will show you how to add these cute felt heart embellishments but you use any shapes you'd like. Shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. Bunnies or easter eggs for Easter. Maybe balloons for a birthday. Have fun with it. If this looks familiar, it's because it was originally written for <a href="http://www.mesewcrazy.com/">Sewing Rabbit</a> but I'm bringing it home today.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Next, trace them out on your sheets of felt. I traced 3 of each size in each color just to make sure I’d have plenty. There is no set amount that you’ll want. It depends on the size of your hearts, the size of your skirt and how many hearts you want on your skirt when you’re done. Felt is cheap, cut as many as you want. If you have too many at the end, you can use them as embellishments on something else later. My daughter made some cards for her brothers out of some of our leftovers.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I used a dark sharpie to trace these so that they’d show up for the photos, but I’d suggest using a color that closely matches your felt. That way, it won’t show up on your final project. You don’t finish the edges and some of my hearts look a little too “homemade” for my taste with their dark sharpie edges, if you know what I mean.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">After you cut out all of our hearts comes the fun part. Stack them all up and make them pretty! Play with your color combinations until you think they look good and have the variety you’re going for. My daughter had SO MUCH fun helping me do this part. <span style="background-color: white; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Pin them onto your skirt in whatever configuration pleases you. I liked mine a bit asymmetrical and clustered them toward the left of the seams. When pinning, keep the center of the heart clear because that is where you’ll sew them down. I found that two pins was plenty to keep them in place.</span></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Now, start sewing. I had a two layer skirt, so I sewed these starting at the tip, but you’ll get a better point if you start at the top of your heart and sew toward the tip. Because of the construction of my skirt, though, this was a whole lot easier for me.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Don’t forget to anchor your stitches with a backstitch at the top and bottom. Go around your whole skirt and sew them all on.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The last step is to fold all of your hearts along the seam to make them stand out a bit, but you can keep them flat if you’d like. It’s up to you.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 16px; line-height: 26px; margin-bottom: 2.6rem; padding: 0px;">

I took a craftster sabbatical a while back and when I went back today, I discovered this beauty!<br />

<br />
Looks like I won their "Best Of" award in January. Somehow, I had no idea. I'm so amazed and humbled and a little embarrassed that I only found out now. Well, better late than never, right?<br />
